{"id":904,"date":"2010-01-24T04:57:56","date_gmt":"2010-01-24T12:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/?p=904"},"modified":"2011-11-16T09:43:44","modified_gmt":"2011-11-16T17:43:44","slug":"a-stein-jo-davidson-kind-of-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/24\/a-stein-jo-davidson-kind-of-week\/","title":{"rendered":"A Stein-Jo Davidson Kind of Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past week I was in New York City (with a stopover first in Baltimore to visit Gertrude\u2019s cousin, Julian Stein, Jr. \u2013 more on that later) and as usual stayed at the Bryant Park Hotel not far from the Jo Davidson sculpture of Gertrude Stein in Bryant Park.<\/p>\n<p>The sculpture has been in the park since 1992 and was donated by Dr. Maury Leibowitz. This casting is number eight in an edition of ten.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t remember the first time that I saw it and it\u2019s certainly a coincidence that the hotel that I\u2019ve stayed in for years happens to be nearby. \u00a0When I\u2019m here, however, I make a point of visiting it.<\/p>\n<p>A picture of the sculpture is deceptive since it looks so much larger in a photo than it really is.\u00a0 It\u2019s \u00a0only a little more than about 2 feet wide and maybe 3 feet high, but is very imposing because of Gertrude\u2019s Buddha-like seated position.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/GSBParkfront.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-906\" title=\"GSBParkfront\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/GSBParkfront-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Gertrude&#8217;s full figure, evident both from the front and back, attests to Alice\u2019s cooking and the delicacies provided by their various cooks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/GSBParkback1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-918\" title=\"GSBParkback\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/GSBParkback1-299x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gertrude sat for Davidson in his Paris studio in 1922, four years before Alice gave her\u00a0 the famous Caesar haircut, so the statue features a Gertrude with a full head of Edwardian tresses.\u00a0 The sitting with Davidson is documented in a Man Ray photograph.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_908\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Jo_Stein_Ray_1922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-908\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-908\" title=\"Jo_Stein_Ray_1922\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Jo_Stein_Ray_1922-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jo Davidson and Gertrude, Paris (1922, Man Ray)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Steinian haircut may not be there, but something that is there, which is typical Gertrude, is the garment she\u2019s wearing &#8211; a cross between a Franciscan monk\u2019s robe and a fine Frette bathrobe.\u00a0 Clothes for Gertrude were all about comfort and utility with a hint of current fashion touches provided by Alice\u2019s hand. In this case she is wearing a flowing-collared blouse and brooch: <em>\u201cLovey, please at least wear that silk blouse and add a brooch so you look a bit less like a well-fed \u00a0St. Francis of Assisi.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then there is the un-Miss Smith\u2019s Finishing School for Young Ladies pose, legs spread like John Wayne enjoying a whiskey at the local saloon.\u00a0 This pose undoubtedly greeted many a visitor at the evening salons at 27, rue de Fleurus.\u00a0 Almost twenty years after the sculpture was completed, Gertrude provided fashion designer Pierre Balmain direction to create her skirts wide enough to allow her to sit this way\u2026what a genius wants, a genius gets!<\/p>\n<p>Now to Baltimore where I saw another Davidson sculpture created six years after the Bryant Park Gertrude.\u00a0 In this case it is a bust of ten year old Julian Stein, Jr. who was in Paris with his parents, Julian, Sr. and Rose Ellen. They were visiting cousin Gertrude who often referred to Julian, Sr. as her favorite cousin.\u00a0 Young Julian\u2019s sitting is also documented by Man Ray and involves a story about measles which may be the subject of a future post!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_911\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/JSbusttrim.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-911\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-911\" title=\"JSbusttrim\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/JSbusttrim-178x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julian Stein, Jr. (1928, Jo Davidson)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This bust is beautifully detailed and reminded me of an elegant piece which might have been excavated from a patrician\u2019s villa in Pompeii.\u00a0 How many ten year olds could have boasted about having such an amazing likeness by Jo Davidson sitting next to their collection of model ships and Tarzan books?<\/p>\n<p>But \u00a0the Steins have always had a good eye for art.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/YellowRose3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-912\" title=\"YellowRose3\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/YellowRose3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past week I was in New York City (with a stopover first in Baltimore to visit Gertrude\u2019s cousin, Julian Stein, Jr. \u2013 more on that later) and as usual stayed at the Bryant Park Hotel not far from the Jo Davidson sculpture of Gertrude Stein in Bryant Park.
