Toklas in Paris, one event in a memorable 1967.<\/p>\n<p>In a post several years ago, I used the title \u201cThat Was The Year That Was,\u201d a variation of the mid- 1960s television show called \u201cThat Was The Week That Was.\u201d The program, a predecessor of \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d and John Oliver\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight,\u201d took a humorous, satiric look at the news of the previous week.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate Alice, I&#8217;m looking at \u00a0\u201c\u2026The Year That Was,\u201d 1967. This\u00a0may be one of the last photographs of her taken early in 1967 by Donald Frank, the son of a childhood friend from San Francisco. Actors who died that year \u2013 Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Basil Rathbone and Bert Lahr. Woody Guthrie and John Coltraine also died in 1967, as did poster boy in many a 1960s college dorm room, Che Guevara.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/che\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5626\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5626\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Che.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Celebrities born fifty years ago: Jamie Foxx, Julia Roberts, Vanilla Ice, Harry Connick Jr., Faith Hill, Dave Matthews, Benecio Del Toro, Nicole Kidman, Vin Diesel\u00a0and Pamela Anderson (who would have thought Alice B. and Pamela Anderson could appear on the same page?!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/pamela-anderson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5640\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5640\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Pamela-Anderson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And what was happening in the arts?<\/p>\n<p>The best selling book was\u00a0Elia Kazan&#8217;s Mad Man-era novel,\u00a0<strong>The Arrangement.<\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8220;The theater&#8217;s loss is literature&#8217;s gain: Elia Kazan has written a striking novel.&#8221; (Saturday Review)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the Oscars the best picture, \u201cIn the Heat of the Night;\u201d best director, Mike Nichols for \u201cThe Graduate;\u201d best actor, Rod Steiger, \u201cIn the Heat of the Night;\u201d best actress, Katherine Hepburn, \u201cGuess Who\u2019s Coming to Dinner;\u201d and best song, \u201cTalk to the Animals\u201d from \u201cDr. Doolittle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/graduate\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5632\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Graduate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In music: Elvis married Priscilla; The Beatles released both \u201cSgt. The U.S. Military Draft was in effect, but the Draft Lottery would still be two years away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/lbj-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5643\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5643\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/lbj-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the cost of living? The average U.S. income was $7,300; the average new house was $14,350; a new car cost $2,750; gas 33 cents a gallon; a movie ticket $1.25 and the minimum wage was increased to $1.40 while the year-end Dow Jones Industrial Average reached\u00a0905!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/1967-vw\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5645\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5645\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1967-VW.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I graduated from Springfield High School in May (I can&#8217;t convince myself to go to this September&#8217;s reunion) and began my four years at Illinois College, only thirty six miles from home, but a whole new world of experiences away!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5655\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/07\/1967-alice-amidst-the-year-that-was\/hg1968\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5655\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5655\" class=\"wp-image-5655 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/HG1968.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the clean-cut, turtlenecked college student<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While in San Francisco&#8221;The Summer of Love&#8221; would officially usher in Hippiedom and Alice&#8217;s 1954, North African inspired, non chocolate, Hashish Fudge recipe would morph into the tastier Alice B.
