Today is the 50th<\/sup> anniversary of the death of Alice B. Toklas in Paris, one event in a memorable 1967.<\/p>\n

In a post several years ago, I used the title \u201cThat Was The Year That Was,\u201d a variation of the mid- 1960s television show called \u201cThat Was The Week That Was.\u201d The program, a predecessor of \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d and John Oliver\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight,\u201d took a humorous, satiric look at the news of the previous week.<\/p>\n

To commemorate Alice, I’m looking at \u00a0\u201c\u2026The Year That Was,\u201d 1967. (She lived without Gertrude for twenty-one years.)<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Alice\u00a0died just seven weeks before her 90th<\/sup> birthday. This\u00a0may be one of the last photographs of her taken early in 1967 by Donald Frank, the son of a childhood friend from San Francisco. I have always loved the Kleenex on the bed and Alice’s Pall Mall in hand!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Other well-known people who died in 1967 include writers Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, Carl Sandburg, and Carson McCullers. Actors who died that year \u2013 Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Basil Rathbone and Bert Lahr. Woody Guthrie and John Coltraine also died in 1967, as did poster boy in many a 1960s college dorm room, Che Guevara.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Celebrities born fifty years ago: Jamie Foxx, Julia Roberts, Vanilla Ice, Harry Connick Jr., Faith Hill, Dave Matthews, Benecio Del Toro, Nicole Kidman, Vin Diesel\u00a0and Pamela Anderson (who would have thought Alice B. and Pamela Anderson could appear on the same page?!).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And what was happening in the arts?<\/p>\n

The best selling book was\u00a0Elia Kazan’s Mad Man-era novel,\u00a0The Arrangement.<\/strong>\u00a0“The theater’s loss is literature’s gain: Elia Kazan has written a striking novel.” (Saturday Review)<\/em><\/p>\n

At the Oscars the best picture, \u201cIn the Heat of the Night;\u201d best director, Mike Nichols for \u201cThe Graduate;\u201d best actor, Rod Steiger, \u201cIn the Heat of the Night;\u201d best actress, Katherine Hepburn, \u201cGuess Who\u2019s Coming to Dinner;\u201d and best song, \u201cTalk to the Animals\u201d from \u201cDr. Doolittle.\u201d<\/p>\n

In music: Elvis married Priscilla; The Beatles released both \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band\u201d and \u201cMagical Mystery Tour;\u201d Aretha Franklin recorded \u201cR-E-S-P-E-C-T;\u201d radios also played \u00a0\u201cHappy Together\u201d by The Turtles, \u00a0\u201cLight My Fire\u201d \u00a0by The Doors and Bobbie Gentry\u2019s \u201cOde to Billie Joe,\u201d while the #1 song of the year was \u201cTo Sir With Love\u201d by Lulu.<\/p>\n

On television the shows that premiered included \u201cThe Newlywed Game,\u201d \u201cThe Smother\u2019s Brothers Comedy Hour,\u201d \u201cMr. Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood,\u201d and \u201cThe Carol Burnett Show.\u201d The top-rated TV program was \u201cThe Andy Griffith Show.\u201d The top-selling cigarette brand, still advertised on TV, was Marlboro.<\/p>\n

On Broadway, \u201cCabaret\u201d won the Tony and HAIR opened and would run for 1,750 performances.<\/p>\n

The first Boeing 737 soared in 1967 and EXPO 67 in Montreal welcomed the world to another World\u2019s Fair, a concept that would soon be on its way out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

LBJ was in the White House and bombs were being dropped in Vietnam. The U.S. Military Draft was in effect, but the Draft Lottery would still be two years away.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And the cost of living? The average U.S. income was $7,300; the average new house was $14,350; a new car cost $2,750; gas 33 cents a gallon; a movie ticket $1.25 and the minimum wage was increased to $1.40 while the year-end Dow Jones Industrial Average reached\u00a0905!<\/p>\n

I graduated from Springfield High School in May (I can’t convince myself to go to this September’s reunion) and began my four years at Illinois College, only thirty six miles from home, but a whole new world of experiences away!<\/p>\n

While in San Francisco”The Summer of Love” would officially usher in Hippiedom and Alice’s 1954, North African inspired, non chocolate, Hashish Fudge recipe would morph into the tastier Alice B. Toklas brownie for which generations have been thankful!<\/p>\n

Nineteen Sixty Seven, “That Was the Year That Was’ and Alice B., you were a part of that groovy time! \u00a0“I (We)<\/em> Love You, \u00a0Alice B. Toklas” (and so does Gertrude Stein!) \u00a0Sorry, that movie didn’t come around till 1968!<\/p>\n
