Other books have been about lesser known trailblazers such as Margaret Knight, the inventor of the paper bag making machine, and Lillian Gilbreth, the first female engineer with a PhD, who was immortalized by her children in the book <strong>Cheaper by the Dozen.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I heard about the new picture book from a friend in Canada who is part of my worldwide network of GertrudeandAlice fans \u2013 thank you Brent! The network is one of the most gratifying benefits of my longtime fascination with Our Ladies of Gay Paree! GertrudeandAlice news that I don\u2019t receive through my GoogleAlerts, often arrives via this network.<\/p>\n<p>This imaginative book begins with Alice waking up on her birthday wondering what the day will bring. Gertrude, she senses, is unusually reserved and doesn\u2019t even wish her Happy Birthday. She decides to take a walk around Paris.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/30\/happy-birthday-alice-babette\/9781554988204_1_1024x1024\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5536\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5536\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_1_1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"9781554988204_1_1024x1024\" width=\"473\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_1_1024x1024.jpg 473w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_1_1024x1024-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Gertrude does have something up the sleeve of her billowy blouse! Her plan is to cook a surprise birthday dinner for Alice with stewed beef, creamed potatoes, vegetables and a pineapple upside-down cake (one of my specialties) for dessert!<\/p>\n<p>With Basket by her side, Gertrude gets underway, but of course, things don\u2019t go as planned \u2013 she <strong>is<\/strong> the writer after all and not the cook in this household! Her primary distraction is a special poem which she wants to write for Alice and \u201cwords flowed through Gertrude\u2019s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/30\/happy-birthday-alice-babette\/9781554988204_3_1024x1024\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5537\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_3_1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"9781554988204_3_1024x1024\" width=\"296\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_3_1024x1024.jpg 296w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9781554988204_3_1024x1024-59x59.jpg 59w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the time Alice returns from her walk, which includes a run-in with a jewel thief and a reward \u2013 enough said, you\u2019ll have to read the book!- the kitchen is a mess and the food is ruined since Gertrude had abandoned the pots and pans for her writing desk in order to finish the birthday poem!<\/p>\n<p>Alice to the rescue: the kitchen is cleaned, brownies are baked and a good time is had by all of the birthday guests.<\/p>\n<p>The delicate, pastel illustrations by Qin Leng couldn\u2019t be more perfect. It was fun for me to imagine possible inspirations for her GertrudeandAlice. GertrudeandAlice\u2019s clothes, though conservative, could have been purchased online yesterday or picked up in the women\u2019s department at Le Bon March\u00e9 last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday poem which Gertrude writes for Alice is not in the story, so I include one that was among the love notes which Alice shipped by chance with other Gertrude papers to the Yale University library in 1947:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;Baby precious, I can&#8217;t write<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>such sweet poetry as baby precious<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>but I can love baby precious as much<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>as baby precious loves me, yes<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>it is true my sweet joy and <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>pride and my lovely bride<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>and everything else beside<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>and thank you for a happy<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>birthday and I worked a little<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>too and thank you dear baby<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>precious your dear&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Happy birthday, Alice Babette!<\/p>\n<p>PS<\/p>\n<p>The Author\u2019s Note on the last page gives some information about GertrudeandAlice. One slight correction: it mentions that Alice wrote two books, her memoir <strong>What Is Remembered <\/strong>and her cookbook.
