Alice\u2019s Birthday."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned in the previous two posts, it has been eighty years since GertrudeandAlice returned to the U.S. for Gertrude\u2019s headline-getting lecture tour.<\/p>\n<p>The tour wrapped up in April of 1935 and in that final month, \u00a0GertrudeandAlice returned to California. Gertrude had turned her back on the Golden Gate in 1893 and Alice had last trekked the earthquake-rubble strewn hills of San Francisco in 1907.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5406\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/30\/wrapping-up-the-lecture-tour-a-key-mystery-solved-alices-birthday\/images-19\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5406\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5406\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5406\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/images1.jpg\" alt=\"Alice a bit droopy, Gertrude still smiling!\" width=\"212\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice a bit droopy, Gertrude still smiling!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a nutshell, here is their April itinerary:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Arrive in Pasadena, Gertrude lectures at Community Playhouse.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Party in Beverly Hills. It would not open till 1937.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among their hosts in San Francisco was one of the grande dames of American literature, Gertrude Atherton. This Gertrude was almost twenty years older than G. Stein and had published her first novel in 1888. She continued writing until 1946 with books often set in her native California. I bought a copy of Atherton\u2019s biography a few months ago and right away checked the index to find any references to GertrudeandAlice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5400\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/30\/wrapping-up-the-lecture-tour-a-key-mystery-solved-alices-birthday\/gertrude-atherton-sitting-in-her-study\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5400\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5400\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gertrude-atherton-sitting-in-her-study-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"Gertrude Atherton in repose\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gertrude-atherton-sitting-in-her-study-297x300.jpg 297w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gertrude-atherton-sitting-in-her-study-59x59.jpg 59w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gertrude-atherton-sitting-in-her-study.jpg 334w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gertrude Atherton in repose<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There were several, but the one that excited me the most was in regards to a letter in which G. Stein mentioned that she had received the key to the city in San Francisco. I had uncovered that fact more than twenty years ago in the appendix to the collected letters of Stein and Thornton Wilder, but when I tried to verify the event\u00a0in the History Center of the San Francisco Public Library, Stein wasn\u2019t listed on a document that supposedly contained all of the city\u2019s key recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I feel confident that she and Alice indeed did receive that key from Mayor Rossi and can only speculate what they did with it or what happened to it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5412\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/30\/wrapping-up-the-lecture-tour-a-key-mystery-solved-alices-birthday\/rossi\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5412\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5412\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5412\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rossi.jpg\" alt=\"The dapper Angelo J. Rossi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Where it ended up at the rue de Fleurus was probably determined by its size. Three weeks ago, an Alice quote and illustration was included in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. Its appearance once again reinforced the ongoing popularity of GetrudeandAlice \u2013 not at the level of the daily newspaper stories during the lecture tour, but still very noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/30\/wrapping-up-the-lecture-tour-a-key-mystery-solved-alices-birthday\/alice-b-from-wsj-apr-18-2015-10-56-pm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5415\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5415\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Alice-B.-From-WSJ-Apr-18-2015-10-56-PM-600x201.jpg\" alt=\"Alice B. Of course, three relate to food and the fourth to the love of her life:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u201cWhat is sauce for the goose may be sauce for the gander but is not necessarily sauce for the chicken, the duck, the turkey or the guinea hen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIn the menu, there should be a climax and a culmination. Come to it gently. One will suffice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u201cThe first gatherings of the garden in May of salads, radishes and herbs made me feel like a mother about her baby &#8211; how could anything so beautiful be mine. And this emotion of wonder filled me for each vegetable as it was gathered every year. There is nothing that is comparable to it, as satisfactory or as thrilling, as gathering the vegetables one has grown.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u201cThis has been a most wonderful evening. Gertrude has said things tonight it will take her 10 years to understand.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once again, Happy Birthday cookbook author and literary muse.
