What a year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All years have their ups and downs and this one was no different.<\/p>\n<p>Events on the world stage were as crazy and heart-breaking as ever .\u00a0 And I often wonder as years like 1929 or 1941 or\u00a0 1962 came to a end, whether the despair of events of those years overwhelmed the joys that must also have entered people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>Two major links to GertrudeandAlice left us this year: Julian Stein, Jr. and Robert Lescher.<\/p>\n<p>Those of you who have been following my posts have been introduced to Julian, Gertrude\u2019s cousin, through the excerpts that I\u2019ve featured from his memoirs.\u00a0 (There are more to follow in the new year, I promise.) Julian will be remembered for a long, long time by all of those who knew and loved him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4672\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/24\/another-year-and-fruitcake-to-boot\/julian\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4672\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4672\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4672\" title=\"Julian\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Julian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The unforgettable Julian Stein, Jr.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Robert Lescher was a major figure in the New York publishing scene for 60 years working with such writers as Robert Frost, MFK Fisher and Isaac Bashevis Singer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4673\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/24\/another-year-and-fruitcake-to-boot\/lescher-obit-articleinline\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4673\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4673\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4673\" title=\"LESCHER-obit-articleInline\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/LESCHER-obit-articleInline.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Literary mentor Robert Lescher<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He traveled to Paris in the late 1950\u2019s and early 1960\u2019s to work with Alice on writing her memoir, <strong>WHAT IS REMEMBERED<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Alice had begun work on the book with Max White, whom Gertrude had praised as one of America\u2019s young, up-and-coming writers in the late 1940s. For a number of months he met with Alice at rue Christine, taking notes as she related her life with Gertrude to him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4674\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/24\/another-year-and-fruitcake-to-boot\/max-white-1961\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4674\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4674\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4674\" title=\"Max White, 1961\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Max-White-1961.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Max-White-1961.png 282w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Max-White-1961-211x300.png 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Max White by Alice Neel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, at one point he stormed out of a visit , notes in hand since , as he later put it, he did not believe Alice was telling him the truth and he wanted nothing to do with such a book.\u00a0 He destroyed the notes and it was up to Robert Lescher to again begin the process as her publisher eagerly awaited the manuscript.
