{"id":4504,"date":"2012-10-13T05:35:52","date_gmt":"2012-10-13T12:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/?p=4504"},"modified":"2012-10-18T14:39:25","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T21:39:25","slug":"a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/","title":{"rendered":"A Loved, Loving, Laughing Man Remembered with Laughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are some events in life which can never be repeated or should only be repeated in the most pleasant of dreams. \u00a0Such an event, the memorial for Julian Samuel Stein, Jr., began at a few minutes after 4 PM, October 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 2012 at the Maryland Historical Society one week ago today.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4508\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/imgres-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4508\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4508\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4508\" title=\"imgres-4\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/imgres-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The auditorium of the society was almost filled as Vishwa and I walked in. We were ready to join the SRO corps that would undoubtedly soon form. \u00a0It was like entering the Metropolitan Opera at the final performance of the most highly revered tenor in the world and all seats were taken. \u00a0\u00a0Luckily we saw our friend Betsy, Julian\u2019s partner, near the front of the auditorium and as we wanted to be sure to greet her with loving hugs before the program began, we pushed our way through the not yet seated crowd.<\/p>\n<p>We found Betsy and hugged, all of us a bit teary-eyed. \u00a0She sensed we were looking for seats and there, three seats down from where she was sitting in the front row were four empty chairs next to two of her close friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre two of these taken?\u201d I asked.\u00a0 \u201cNo, \u201c replied Betsy\u2019s friend.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4543\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/betsyandjul-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4543\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4543\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4543\" title=\"BetsyandJul\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BetsyandJul1-600x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BetsyandJul1-600x281.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BetsyandJul1-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BetsyandJul1.jpg 1213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Betsy and Julian&#8230;enough said !<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There we were in the front row for the event of a lifetime to hear about the events of a lifetime!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A copy of the printed program, handed to me by one of Julian&#8217;s daughters, will occupy a hallowed place in my GertrudeandAlice collection.<\/p>\n<p>Each of Julian\u2019s eight children spoke first, recalling love filled memories of someone who had lived a long life, but should still have been there, smiling and hugging and just being Dad! Then came a who\u2019s who of friends beginning with Jim Lehrer, looking much happier to be amongst this august crowd than the one at the first presidential debate he\u2019d hosted only a few days earlier. He recalled the friendships between his daughter and the Stein siblings which formed a bond between the families.<\/p>\n<p>There were tales of old yellow Mustangs, Julian carried piggyback during the search for a hidden waterfall in Maine, skinny-dipping escapades, a NYC taxi \u201cadventure\u201d with an African visitor in full tribal regalia (&#8220;You&#8217;re not Mrs. Stein!&#8221;) and Julian\u2019s fondness for all things religious&#8211;NOT!!!&#8211;, forays with the political elite, Mad Men-era PR campaigns, mentoring, mentoring and more mentoring \u00a0and on and on! (Sorry about all of the exclamation points. I know most of \u00a0my creative writing teachers would not approve, but I can&#8217;t help it!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/spring-yellowmustang\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4519\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4519\" title=\"Spring-YellowMustang\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Spring-YellowMustang.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Spring-YellowMustang.jpg 557w, https:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Spring-YellowMustang-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then anyone else who wanted to say a few words spoke. \u00a0Julian, who would read picture books to young children as part of Baltimore\u2019s Experience Corps program, was thanked by one of the teachers whose classroom he visited regularly.\u00a0 In a waivering voice, she began \u2013\u201cI\u2019m more used to speaking to 5 year olds than to \u00a0a group like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I got up too and in a quivering voice began. &#8220;Most of you probably have absolutely no idea who I am.&#8221; \u00a0Then I introduced myself as one of the newest members of the Julian Stein Fan Club. I mentioned my GertrudeandAlice collection and told about my tour \u00a0with Julian of the Steins Collect exhibition last summer in San Francisco, looking at paintings and furniture he had seen more than eighty years earlier at cousin Gertrude&#8217;s place at 27, rue de Fleurus and at the home of Baltimore&#8217;s Cone sisters.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a few choked-up voices and some tears, it was an extraordinarily joyous event much like the classic Dean Martin roasts that appeared on television from time to time &#8211; not the cable TV versions that have now become more smutfest than comedy tribute.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4512\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/dmartin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4512\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4512\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4512\" title=\"DMartin\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DMartin.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Dean Martin: &#8220;But Julian 85 miles per hour?! Even Jerry and Sammy have more control.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Julian\u2019s \u201cRoast\u201d would have featured George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and Mae West, had she been able to waddle up to the podium. Publisher Bennett Cerf would probably also be there, as well as a politician or two, but only those with real senses of humor and not just laughs for laughs sake on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p>[Note: I apologize to younger readers and readers of this post in other countries if many of these celebrity names may be unfamiliar. \u00a0They certainly show my age. \u00a0However, only the classic personalities of the last 80 years, would have been appropriate to have honored this classic, funny man.]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4513\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/georgeandgracie\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4513\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4513\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4513\" title=\"GeorgeandGracie\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/GeorgeandGracie.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George and Gracie Allen, &#8220;And then Julian said&#8230;!&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_4514\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/13\/a-loved-loving-laughing-man-remembered-with-laughter\/may-west\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4514\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4514\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4514\" title=\"May West\" src=\"http:\/\/gertrudeandalice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/May-West.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Miss Mae West: &#8220;Julian Stein? The cat&#8217;s meow!&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As many said during the program and at the impressive reception following it:\u00a0\u201cThis <strong>is <\/strong>what a memorial event should be like and I only wish mine will be similar!\u201d \u00a0That may be very wishful thinking on all of our parts as there will never be another Julian S.
